Wilmington/Newark Line Special Service

Emergency Schedule During Amtrak Track Repairs Due to Freight Derailment

SEPTA is working to reduce the inconvenience to customers who use the Wilmington/Newark Line for daily and weekend travel as a result of the freight car derailment on the Northeast Corridor, which is causing tracks to be taken out of service. We understand one of the most important things we can do right now is to keep you informed and updated while Amtrak completes their track repairs. We have prepared this information to help riders impacted by this work to navigate the schedule and service changes that will be in effect for the next 3-4 weeks. SEPTA Staff will be out to assist customers and answer questions at Wilmington/Newark Line Stations and in Center City.

Customers should refer to the special timetable for complete service information as select trains will operate at different times than regularly scheduled.

What Happened?

On Thursday, two hopper cars on a Norfolk Southern freight train derailed along the Amtrak Northeast Corridor. This track, which is controlled, operated, and maintained by Amtrak is also used by the SEPTA Wilmington/Newark Line. This incident created extensive damage to Tracks 2 & 3 including approximately one mile of damage in the area between Eddystone and Crum Lynne Stations.

In order to complete the car cleanup and the track repair work, Amtrak has taken Tracks 2 & 3 completely out of service, leaving only Tracks 1 & 4 available for Amtrak and SEPTA operations. This outage will run 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and may last for up to 3-4 weeks.

How is this Impacting SEPTA Wilmington/Newark Service?

This portion of the Northeast Corridor is extremely busy, which presents a challenge to safely schedule Wilmington/Newark Line service around the full complement of Amtrak Acela and Regional service and be able to position SEPTA trains to operate the service with a 50% reduction in open track. Additionally, Amtrak is closing the track area to SEPTA train service at 9:00 p.m., which means that all evening inbound and outbound Wilmington/Newark Line service must be clear of the area before 9:00 p.m.

Emergency Schedule & Service

While this work takes place, the Wilmington/Newark Line will operate an Emergency Schedule for weekday and weekend service. This schedule represents the greatest level of service we can provide given the track constraints but we realize that customers will still be impacted by these changes. We continue to work with Amtrak while they make these repairs and will adjust the schedule as possible.

During this time, trains will NOT stop at Highland Ave or Curtis Park Stations and there will be some changes in service patterns.

Customers should regularly refer to the Emergency Schedule posted at stations and on the SEPTA website for details. Please note the following highlights:
